The U-Step will not roll until you lightly squeeze either hand brake. Once you release the hand brake, the unit will stop immediately. This feature is particularly helpful when standing up from a chair because the unit will not roll away from you.

Adjust Speed for User:

Unlike other rolling walkers, you can adjust the rolling speed of the U-Step II. Many people find wheeled walkers roll too fast for them. That is why the U-Step is engineered with a control for setting the rolling resistance. Loosen the set screw and rotate the adjustment lever to the desired amount of resistance, then re-tighten the set screw.

Folding Walker:

Folding the U-Step II is as easy as one, two, three! Lift the release lever by the seat, pull up on the seat support to fold the U-Step II and put it in the car; no bending down to pick it up. The U-Step II is four pounds lighter than the original UStep, making it easier to lift and transport.

See the U-Step video:

Click here to see the U-Step Walker on our website or call 866-722-4581 for more information.

TENS Units

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator - T.E.N.S.

A TENS Units is a small electrical device that delivers electrical impulses across the skin. Transcutaneous (through the skin) electrical nerve stimulation sends an electrical current to specific nerves. The current may be delivered intermittently. The mild electrical current blocks pain signals to the brain and generates heat that serves to relieve stiffness, improve mobility, and relieve pain. The treatment is believed to stimulate the body's production of endorphins or natural pain killers.

The Deluxe Dual Channel AGF-3X is on sale for $49.95 - complete kit includes everything you need.

Dual Channel TENS Units have 2 sets of lead-wires and electrodes. Each channel has it's own controls for pulse width and frequency. Pulse intensity (amplitude) is also adjustable on a channel basis.

In most cases, studies show that it takes roughly 30 minutes for TENS treatment to begin to relieve pain. However, for conventional, high frequency TENS treatment, there is no set treatment limit. Some patients find hours of pain relief from short 30-to-60 minute sessions. Others use their TENS units for several hours a day or all day, depending on the pain generated by daily activities.

Click here to see all our TENS Units

Sliding Transfer Bench - Sliding Bath Bench

Choose the sliding bath bench that works best for your situation. In addition, the SOLO2 operates standard Pulse-Dose (settings 1-5). Even though you may be fortunate enough to use pulse-dose settings, the advantage of owning a system that operates continuous-flow is that it will work for you while sleeping. Most O2 users cannot use pulse-dose during sleep because breathing is irregular. Pulse dose technology has advanced in recent years, but breathing patterns during sleep are too erratic for sensing a breath.

Continuous-Flow:
In addition to sleep benefits, O2 users on continuous-flow are now able to leave home without carrying a carload of O2 cylinders. Even the largest of oxygen cylinders drains quickly if you can't use a conserving device. The SOLO2 can supply up to 3-LPM to satisfy most patient requirements and the machine will run about 2.5 hours on 3-LPM setting.

Pulse-Dose:
The SOLO2 can run up to 3-hours on the low-range of it's pulse-dose settings. Average pulse-dose settings at 20 breaths per minute:

Setting 1: 18ml

Setting 2: 36ml

Setting3: 54ml

Setting 5: 90ml

Conserving technology built into the SOLO2 (called Sensi) senses a breath and delivers the required amount of O2. This technology greatly increases battery life per charge.

Getting Charged Up:
The SOLO2 charges it's supplemental battery anytime it is plugged into a AC or DC power source, and it charges while it is operating. The supplemental battery charges in about 3 hours. You can also purchase additional supplemental batteries to extend your time away from home.

Click here to read more about the SOLO2 Transportable Concentrator

Patient Lifts Help save Caregivers’ Backs

If you work in the healthcare profession or if you have a friend or family member you help in getting up or in moving from chair to bed or to bath, you know just how difficult it can sometimes be. Helping someone get up can put a great strain on your back in addition to often being awkward or embarrassing for the patient. However, a patient lift can make the entire process much easier for everyone involved.

All Patient Lifts require a caregiver. The patient cannot and should not operate the lift by themselves. There are a number of different types of patient lifts. Manual Patient Lifts use a hydraulic pump. Powered Patient Lifts use rechargeable batteries and everything is motorized. Standup Lifts raise the patient from the seated position to standing position.

If you find yourself unable to stand without assistance, a patient lift may be something you need. Likewise, if you assist many people with standing or getting into the bath, you may also find the lift a great asset in your job.

What Lift Chairs Can Do For You

If you have issues getting up out of a chair, you may think you just have to live with it. After all, what exactly can be done other than adding a pillow to your seat or behind your back? But there is actually something you can do: you can invest in a power lift chair. These chairs feature built-in motors that help you get up out of the chair.

Lift chairs are full, padded recliners just like you’d purchase from any furniture store. They recline, feature a foot rest, and have nicely padded armrests. When you need to get up though, you simply press a button on the attached remote and the chair tilts up and helps you stand. There are several different types of lift chairs - some have two or three positions, while others actually allow you to recline until you’re almost horizontal, turning your recliner into a bed that can lift you right up to your feet. If you have been injured or have arthritis in your knees or hips, a lift chair can get you back on your feet without any pain.

However, you may be worried about the cost of a lift chair. While that’s true if you buy the first lift chair you see, you can find discount lift chairs with only a little searching. This is especially true online. Discount lift chairs purchased from an online site are often cheaper since they don’t include as many mark-ups. Plus, some sites offer free shipping, so you save money on the price and don’t have to pay to have it sent to you!

See our Lift Chair Catalog

Work Safety Equipment

Many jobs don’t require any special support or equipment, but some do. In fact, some jobs that require safely equipment might surprise you. Working as a stocker in a grocery store, for example, often requires you to wear a back support since you’ll be doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Back supports are the most common piece of work safety equipment, and anyone who does a lot of heavy lifting on a regular basis should probably use one. Some of these back supports simply Velcro around your waste, while others feature straps that look similar to suspenders. Both types give your back the support it needs when bending, lifting, or carrying heavy objects.

Lumbar belts provide lumbar support to your lower back when bending or lifting. These belts help you keep proper posture. The belt is flexible enough to provide support in all the correct places while you move yet still keep your back fully supported. Some lumbar belts feature shoulder straps for extra support, while others leave off the shoulder straps to give you more mobility.

If you’ll be doing a lot of work down low, you may want to invest in a pair of knee pads. While you can purchase a set of knee pads from anywhere, you may want to invest in specific knee pads for work situations. These types of knee pads include shock absorbers and layers of padding to reduce vibration.

Finally, if you’ll be running equipment that vibrates or shakes often, you may want to get a pair of anti-vibration gloves. These gloves help insulate your hands and redistribute the vibrations so that your hands don’t go numb. Again, any regular pair of gloves will help somewhat, but gloves made specifically to cut down on vibrations are going to help protect your hands more.

Orthopedic Shoes

Benefits of Orthopedic Shoes

Ending up with sore feet is very common with people who are on their feet the whole day. The reason for these sore feet is foot problems attributed to the wrong choice of shoes and shoe sizes.

Women generally wear high heel shoes, which are not advised for the feet as the feet get squeezed and the foot arch is brought up high. Though men usually wear only everyday and running shoes, these shoes end up tight and can also cause foot problems. It is for such predicaments that minor orthopedic shoes could be used for relief.

Orthopedic footwear is today prescribed to anyone suffering from foot problems, and not only for the old and those suffering from major foot problems. This is because minor orthopedic footwear can help correct many foot problems such as painful heels, calluses, corns, hammer toes, athlete’s foot, ingrown and thick toe nails, diabetic foot problems, warts, flat feet, bunions, dry foot, athlete’s foot and tired feet.

It is the support found in the arch in these shoes that ensures proper foot position when walking, standing and running. Even foot shock that results from movement is better absorbed by these shoes. These orthopedic shoes come with extra width to provide more space when walking, so you feel much more comfortable while doing your work.

Aetrex Shoes offer comfort while walking and are designed to fit any foot. These shoes provide the required comfort for aching feet and are just what the doctor prescribed for all your foot ailments.

By wearing orthopedic shoes you can avoid major foot problems and enjoy those activities you could not enjoy doing because of your feet problems.

Fight and win over Pressure Ulcers

Patriot Low Air Loss Rotational Mattress Replacement System

Preventing Pressure Ulcers means ensuring that immobile patients change their position at least every two hours to relieve pressure. Both treatment and prevention of Pressure Ulcers require the right tools.

The Patriot Rotational Mattress is an affordable support surface system that can provide therapeutic treatment for Stage III and IV, or multiple Stage II pressure ulcers. It works in either Low-Air-Loss mode or Rotational Mode. When switched to rotational mode you are prompted for rotation intervals. Rotation mode on the Patriot mattress means that it first turns one direction, and then, depending on the interval setting, turns the other direction. Turn Mode gives the care giver the option of 10, 20, or 30 minute cycle times. When in Low Air Loss mode the mattress provides 8" of true low-air-loss for a dry, comfortable, pressure-free surface.

Read more about Pressure Ulcers and Bed Sores (Decubitus ulcer).
Browse our catalog of Group II Support Surfaces

Is It Just Snoring Or Is It Sleep Apnea?

Sleep Apnea may be preventing you from getting the rest you need. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a serious health problem but many people don't even know they have it. Usually it is the bed partner who first notices that the person is struggling to breathe. Snoring is not the same as sleep apnea. Snoring is simply a loud sound that you make during breathing while asleep if there is any obstruction in your airway.

How can you tell if it's just snoring or OSA?
When you sleep, your airway relaxes, just like the rest of your body. However, as it does so, it collapses and becomes blocked, or obstructed. When the back of your throat vibrates against obstruction, it's called snoring. For the most part, snoring is not really a medical problem. While it can be irritating to other people sleeping in the same room, most snoring doesn't cause problems.

However, the airway can be so blocked that it completely blocks your breathing. Without air, your body cannot take in oxygen. Once your blood oxygen level drops below a certain level, the central nervous system triggers your body to gasp for breath. To do this, you partially wake up. This cycle can happen several times through the night.

There are several problems with this scenario: First, the repeated cycle keeps you from falling into deep sleep which your body needs. You will be tired and irritable the next day and may not be focused enough to safely drive or to work.

More importantly, the loss of oxygen can lead to memory loss, impotence, hypertension, heart attacks and strokes.

If you think that you or a loved one has OSA, it is well worth the effort to see a doctor. He or she can rule out other causes and recommend treatments such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines. These devices keep enough air flowing to keep the airway open. CPAP machines have been proven to help snoring and OSA problems.

There's no need to suffer from snoring. See a doctor today and get some good sleep.

Pediatric Gait Trainer

This Miniwalk Gait Trainer is a perfect tool for teaching motor skills and balance. The seat and trunk support is easily adjusted to fit the child. The Miniwalk's seat slightly suspends the legs for free movement. Trunk is supported with comfortable padded bar that provides a secure feeling for the child. Seat height, handlebars and trunk support are all height adjustable.

What's different about the Miniwalk is it's suspension system. It moves up and down during gait, allowing for a more normal heel strike, toe off and mid phase as the child moves forward. The spring assist system aids the child's “swing through” during gait.

Human gait is measured from heel strike to heel strike, also known as the gait cycle or "one stride." The gait cycle has two phases, the stance (about 60% of the cycle) and the swing (about 40%).

The Miniwalk Gait Trainer is available in 2 sizes and is designed for children 1.5 - 10 years of age.

Miniwalk I (1.5 - 3 years of age)
Miniwalk II (3 - 10 years of age)

See all our Pediatric Walkers and Gait Trainers

Memory Foam Hospital Mattress

Our PreferredCare Mattress is specially designed for Adjustable Hospital Beds. It may be possible to get Medicare coverage for some medical equipment and supplies. Here is a brief list of common items and whether or not they are covered by Medicare. We provide Medicare Billing as a courtesy to customers purchasing qualified products. We do not bill for items considered "capped rental" purchased on the Internet.

Items that may be covered include:

Diabetic shoes and inserts, if they are custom-fitted by a podiatrist. You must seek local Medicare Biller.

Lift chair seat mechanisms (costs are reimbursed), if the lift chair is deemed medically necessary. We file Medicare Claims for Lift Chairs.

All Walkers. We file Medicare claims for all Walkers.

Manual Wheelchairs. Covered as capped rental, seek local supplier.

Power wheelchairs. We file Medicare non-assigned, meaning you pay up front.

Splints and other orthotic equipment. We provide Medicare billing.

Powered scooters if the patient cannot operate a manual wheelchair but can safely use a powered vehicle and if the patient needs a wheelchair or scooter to get around. We file Medicare Claims for Scooters as non-assigned, meaning you pay up-front.

Items that are not likely to be covered include:

Adjustable beds. Only Hospital Bed is covered.

Bedside tables.

Compression hosiery

Ramps or lifts

Most bathroom equipment (including shower chairs, raised toilet seats, etc).

Some items qualify as capped rentals. This means that Medicare will pay 80 percent of the rental cost for 13 months of continuous use. Most insurance policies will pay the other 20 percent. You should seek a local dealer that provides this equipment, we do not bill Medicare for Capped Rentals over the Internet.

Some capped rental items include:

CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) machines

Semi Electric hospital beds

Manual wheelchairs

Nebulizers

Oxygen concentrators

Manual/hydraulic patient lifts (not stand-up patient lifts)

Mattress overlays

This is only a partial list intended to provide a general idea of Medicare coverage. It is best to consult a medical supply company, an insurance provider or a Medicare representative for answers to specific questions. In these days of high costs, it is essential to get the most accurate and up-to-date information available on medical insurance coverage.

Find more Medicare Coverage information on our Medicare FAQ page.

SmartPulse Fingertip Pulse Oximeter

The SmartPulse is a small, reusable fingertip oximeter that quickly spot-checks oxygen saturation levels (Sp02) for oxygen therapy patients. And with drivers shelling out a full Grand (that's $1000) for a fill-up, shipping and delivery charges are rising at a proportional rate. In some cases our actual shipping charges have seen a 60% increase. The increase is particularly noticeable for oversize shipments.

Hospital Beds and Adjustable Beds, Lift Chairs and Power Wheelchairs, all examples of oversize products (Freight Deliveries), have risen a full 60% and this is reflected in our White Glove In-Home Setup charges.

These high fuel cost must be affecting all aspects of commerce, not just e-commerce. Websites and Internet Merchants that are not keeping on top of manufactures (vendor) price increases and ignoring the increase in shipping cost are setting themselves up for failure. That's not entirely a bad thing, and is part of the otherwise natural process that occurs over time in which we separate the good, the bad, the ugly, and the missing. They won't be around long without making a profit.

Living with Arthritis

According to the CDC forty-six million Americans report that a doctor told them they have arthritis or other rheumatic conditions. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States, limiting the activities of nearly 19 million adults. Arthritis comprises over 100 different diseases and conditions.

People with Arthritis of the Hip of Knee will see immediate benefit from a Lift Chair. Many Arthritis patients don't know these functional chairs exist. These Chairs are Recliners, just like a Lazy-Boy, but with electric motors to control all functions. The motors are controlled with a hand-pendant and at the push of a button the user can be lifted into the standing position. Likewise, the Lift Chairs sit the patient down from the standing position. The user simply leans into the chair (in it's standing position) while pressing the down button on the hand control. The whole process of getting up and down is now effortless. Reclining is also achieved with electric motors. No levers to pull as on a standard recliner.

Medicare patients with severe Arthritis of the Hip or Knee may qualify for Medicare partial coverage of a Lift Chair. I say "partial" because total back from Medicare is about $280 and maybe another $50-$60 back from any secondary insurance. Find more information on Filing a Medicare Claim for Lift Chair in our Medicare FAQ. Adding wheels to a walker means removing the bottom portion of the leg and replacing it with a leg with wheel attached.

Why a Prescription is Required for Nebulizer

It takes all kinds!

Several calls this morning: Why do I need a doctor's prescription for a nebulizer?

Almost everyone looking to purchase a nebulizer asks this question. The answer is simple: because it's the law. Nebulizers are regulated by the FDA just like the prescription medication you use in it. Sometimes it's hard to be opened minded about why things are the way they are.

Why all the fuss?

The clinical answer is because we wouldn't want you to do damage to your lungs with improper usage.

The real-world answer is because drug addicts find the nebulizer as a sure-fire way to get their illicit drugs down deep into their lungs.

With the use of a Nebulizer, the abuser's drug of choice, whether it be cocaine, amphetamines (meth), barbiturates or speed is turned into a fine mist spray and forced deep down into the lungs for their ultimate high.

Can you say STUPID!

Nebulizers for Children with Asthma

Childhood Asthma

I'm surprised at the alarming number of customers purchasing nebulizer systems for their children. So many that nebulizer manufacturers have introduced models designed specifically for children. Penguins, farm animals, race cars, and more disguise these medication delivery systems.

Asthma is caused by inflammation in the airways. When an asthma attack occurs, the muscles surrounding the airways become tight and the lining of the air passages swell. This reduces the amount of air that can pass by, and can lead to wheezing sounds.

Most people with asthma have wheezing attacks separated by symptom-free periods. Some patients have long-term shortness of breath with episodes of increased shortness of breath. Still, in others, a cough may be the main symptom. Asthma attacks can last minutes to days and can become dangerous if the airflow becomes severely restricted.

African-American and Puerto Rican children are six times as likely as white children to die of asthma.

Inner-city children are exposed to more indoor and outdoor allergens, triggers for breathing problems, in their home.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, African-American and Puerto Rican children are six times as likely as white children to die of asthma. In minority children, “the prevalence of asthma is about 40 percent higher, but the difference in the adverse outcomes is three times, four times higher for hospitalizations,” said Dr. Lara Akinbami, a researcher at the center who tracks childhood asthma. “Given that we have the tools to prevent those things, that does reach the level of a public health crisis.”

Children in poor inner-city communities are disproportionately exposed to both indoor and outdoor allergens — cockroaches, mice, mold, dust, cigarette smoke, automobile exhaust, soot — that can trigger breathing problems.

Common asthma triggers include:

Tobacco smoke

Dust

Pollen

Exercise

Viral infections, such as the common cold

Animals (hair or dander)

Chemicals in the air or in food

Mold

Changes in weather (most often cold weather)

Strong emotions

Aspirin and other medications

Children's airways are narrower than those of adults.
This means that triggers that may cause only a slight problem in an adult can create more serious problems in children. In children, an asthma attack can appear suddenly with severe symptoms. For this reason, it is important that asthma be diagnosed and treated correctly. Some children may need to take medicine every day, even when they do not have symptoms.

Find Respiratoty Supplies and Equipment such as Nebulizers on our website: phc-online.com
